The Ironman Marathon

As you start out on the ironman-marathon you will most likely experience several different emotions.

I used to find it very difficult at times to convince myself to leave the run-transition area. After a long hard bike it often feels that finishing the marathon distance would be next to impossible. It is at this point in the race that your determination and reslove may truly be tested. This is where the term “ironman” begins to have meaning.

Remember that you are not alone in feeling this. There are hundreds of first time Ironman hopefuls dealing with the same emotions. Keep in mind that you had an intelligent swim and conserved energy for this point in the race.

One thing I learned over the years is how much our bodies can withstand and just how much we are capable of if we dare to try. Often our spirit is conquered long before our physical energy is used up.

A good example is my last ironman. At almost exactly the half-way point in the bike I had a bad crash. I lost focus for just a few seconds and slipped off the shoulder of the road. When I tried to recover the bike went over and I hit the road very hard. The last half of the bike was fairly difficult. As I sat in the run-transition tent my shoulder was extremely sore and it was only my experience that I knew my body could withstand quite a lot if I gave it a chance.

I was at the stage in my career where I felt that Ironman could well be my last and I didn’t want to end my career by dropping out of the race.

The marathon took me 5 hours and 5 minutes. The Ironman took me 14 hours and 15 minutes. I found out later that I had a separated shoulder. I sort of had a feeling that was the case but then I reasoned that I wasn’t running on my hands so it would work out.

I’m telling you this story because when you get at this point in the race you just have to realilze that no matter how sore and tired you feel, the ability your body has to recover will amaze you if you give it a chance.

As soon as you cross that start mat and your timer beeps do your best to run. At first your stride will be very short and unnatural, but as your legs adjust to the demands of running you will begin to feel and run better. Run for as long as you can without stopping. You want to get some kilometers behind you. When and if you just ‘have’ to walk try and walk the aid stations and run in between as much as you can. When you do walk try and walk at a fast pace.

Hopefully you practiced this in your training as I suggested in the run-training page. It makes a huge difference if you go into the Ironman with a flexible race plan.

Be very careful at the aid stations when it comes to choosing your food and drink. The urge is to try some of everything as you try and find the secret that will make you feel less sore and tired and possibly boost your energy. Many athletes have gotten sick during the ironman-marathon from making this mistake.

Really try not to mix your food and drink choices. I would suggest avoiding coke and pepsi until the last 6 or 7 miles. Remember that if you do start drinking it, then you should drink it at ‘every’ aid station or else you risk really upsetting your sugar balance.

One year I drank nothing but water at every station and didn’t eat at all. I felt good and didn’t want to mess with it. My ironman-marathon time was 3 hours 34 minutes. So I think that goes to show you don’t necessarily have to fill your body with grapes, bananas,cookies, and whatever else you have to choose from. Just go with what works for you at the time.

Try and make a point of not walking the downhills. I have seen many people do this and I could never understand it. You should take advantage of gravity every chance you get. Just like on the bike. If you plan on walking the uphills then be sure to run the downhills. Do everything you can to get those kilometers behind you without using up too much energy too soon.

Take heart in the fact that there are hundreds of you out there sharing the same dream. To finish the race. It is truly a beautiful thing when you see so many so determined to reach a common goal.

You may find it helpful to run with someone along the way. Be careful however. They may deviate quite a bit from what you have been doing and throw off your race plan. Sometimes its best to run on your own until you are CERTAIN you are hooking up with the right person.

Its always an uplifting moment when you make the final outward leg and turn for home for the last time. Now each kilometer that passes you feel a lift in your spirit.

In the final 6 or 7 kilometers you will most likely discover that you have an amazing amount of energy left. This happens over and over in the Ironman-marathon. For some reason, some sort of physical change takes place and many people have a sustained burst of energy.

You will also be lifted by an increasing number of spectators as you get nearer and nearer to the finish. Soon dozens turn to hundreds and you hear that amazing, welcome sound of the finish line announcer. This is when it will really hit home that you are really going to do it! You are going to be an Ironman!

Be sure to take it all in, because this moment will be etched in your memory forever. No matter how many Ironman races you do, this is one you will never forget.

Bodyweight Training At Its Best

As a qualified fitness instructor, I usually get asked what’s the best style of equipment for a home fitness center. In the past I’ve informed the individual that such and such a brand name is good for a range of reasons. Don’t get me wrong, there are some great quality pieces of affordable home gym equipment that will get you in extraordinary shape, but recently my reply to individuals as to the best piece of equipment for a home gym has been.. your own body utilizing bodyweight drills.

When one thinks of bodyweight exercises they usually think of pushups and maybe chinups. They also think that bodyweight exercises are fine to “just stay in shape.” Nothing can be further from the truth.

Bodyweight training can completely transform your physique when done accurately. If your aim is weight loss, bodyweight training can get you to that goal. If your target is to develop muscle, bodyweight training can do that also.

One of the benefits of bodyweight training is that the gym is always with you. Anyplace you go, you have access to “the gym.” I’ve done chinups on park monkey bars as my daughter plays. There is always something available to push off of or pull up on.

If you have the space in your home, I highly recommend a piece of equipment commonly called a “power tower.” This is a self standing piece that allows you do chinups, dips, pushups and leg raises for your abs. This one single piece of equipment, which doesn’t take up much room, can change your physique.

It is the one central piece of equipment I utilize in each workout session. As a matter of fact, I’ve sold most of my home gym equipment and rely largely on my power tower for a full upper body workout. In my judgment there is no other exercise that compares to dips and chinups for the upper body.

What about exercising your legs you may ask? Bodyweight squats are terrific for your legs and for a challenge you can do them one leg at a time. There is another little torture contraption I own called the Roman Chair Squat Bench that allows for incredible bodyweight squats to be done with small space. That is for another discussion however.

Even though all you need is your bodyweight to get a fine workout, there will come a point when your own bodyweight doesn’t offer adequate resistance to make the workout challenging enough to elevate muscle building for example.

Sure you can just keep doing more and more reps each workout but if your purpose is to build some muscle you will need to keep the reps under 15 and if your bodyweight is not enough, you’ll need to add resistance somehow.

This is where a weighted vest and/or dip belt comes in handy. A dip belt is just a leather or fabric belt that hangs around your waist with chains in the front to support weight plates. This will allow more than enough resistance to be added to make dips and chinups more difficult. The weighted vest can be used for pushups and squats.

So for a few dollars you possess all you require to get in wonderful shape. I can hear some people now wondering where are the curls, the tricep exercises, and so on. How will I get giant biceps if I don’t do my million curls?

Believe me, if you can do chins with your bodyweight plus an additional 50lbs - 100lbs around your waist, I can promise you will not have undersized biceps.

All that’s left is to devise a routine based around pushups, squats, dips and chins. Even though there are other great bodyweight exercises, these are the most fundamental for most folks to do safely and without problems. Other bodyweight exercises like handstand pushups will blast your shoulders but that is a bit more advanced and out of the scope of this article.

A routine can consist of bodyweight squats, dips and chins done 2 - 3 times a week. Just like any weight training routine, more is not better. You need time to let the muscle recuperate so 2 - 3 times a week is more than enough. Especially when you start to add resistance to the exercises.

If your objective is weight loss, bodyweight training can do the trick while still building some muscle along the way. All you want to do is take less time between sets in order to initiate the fat burning process in your body.

For example, if you do bodyweight squats for 5 sets of 25 reps with very little rest between sets, I guarantee your heart rate will be up and you’ll be burning body fat. Similar thing goes for dips and chins. Take less time between exercises for fat burning and take more time to recuperate when muscle building is your goal.

I hope you can appreciate the advantage of bodyweight training in terms of overall physical condition and cost effectiveness. You don’t require the newest home gym or infomercial product to get in fantastic shape.

Yoga has a history dating back over five thousand years, to the beginning of the civilization of man. Little is really known about Yoga. it is believed to have originated in Mehrgarh, a neolithic settlement in what is now Afghanistan. Scholars believe it has grown out of Stone Age Shamanism. In this early period of civilization’s beginnings, Yoga was a community resource, because of its attempts to determine cosmic order through inner vision, and apply it to daily living. In later years, yoga evolved into an inner dialogue through which the Yogis sought to develop their own salvation and enlightenment.

Archaeological evidence of the existence of Yoga first appeared in stone seals excavated from the Indus valley. It depicted figures in many Yogic Asanas, or postures, and officially put Yoga in the time period of approximately 3000 B.C. Of greater import, it also linked yoga to the great Indus-Sarasvati Civilization, a period in time that was considered modern and efficient.

From the Indus-Sarasvati civilization came the ancient texts known as the Vedas, the oldest scriptures in the world. The Vedas are a collection of hymns that praise a higher power and contains the oldest recorded history of Yoga teachings. The Vedas required the practitioner to transcend human limitations, and reach a higher spiritual plane. In later years, texts known as the Brahmanas were written to explain the rituals and the hymns of the Vedas. Following this came the Aranyakas texts, which outlined the practice of Yogis living in the seclusion of the forest. This led to the beginning of India’s medical tradition, known as Ayurveda. All in all, Yoga transformed into a practice of health, harmony of the spirit, and a way of life.

The Christian viewpoint is thus - if one opens the mind to clearer thinking and inner vision, they open the spirit to demonic possession. It is felt that Yoga practice borders on occultism, and that opening one’s mind and spirit to the benefit of yoga is both dangerous and against everything Christianity preaches. Christians believe that studying yoga is akin to practicing Hinduism, and one cannot separate the philosophy of Hinduism from their Christian beliefs, regardless of the health benefit of yoga.

As a practicing Buddhist, I take issue with this viewpoint. To me, this smacks of tunnel vision and narrowmindedness. A Christian is expected to open their heart and minds to Jesus, and to give in to the spirit of the Lord. They are expected to rely on blind faith, and to accept the word of God as the only truth in the world. A thinking person would find this hypocritical, for on the one hand Christians preach that Yoga must be avoided because opening the mind to clearer vision encourages the possibility of demonic possession, yet on the other hand preaches that one must open the mind and heart to accept Jesus into their lives. Opening one’s heart and mind is exactly that - whether it is to look into one’s self, or to accept Jesus into their lives. If, as Christians preach, we are open to demonic possession if we look inside ourselves and open the mind to all the possibilities, how then can we safely open our hearts to the concept of Christianity? Is there a gatekeeper who makes this decision when we do so that determines what path we are to follow? I think not…

For the record, I was raised in a Christian household. My father was the deacon of a small Baptist church in the farming community where we lived. My mother, who taught us children to question everything, moved from the Baptist community to the Assembly of God churches, and was ostracized by my father. I think that to her dying day, she resented my father for this narrowmindedness. Life is a matter of choice, and my mother believed that we are not required to operate under the illusion of blind faith, but to do what is right to us as an individual. And it is why I walk the Noble 8 Folded Path. It is simply a matter of choice, and questioning everything in this universe.

I believe that the practice of yoga is a good thing. It provides us with great health benefits, clearer vision, and harmony in our souls. And in this day and age, what else is there? Whether we be Christians, Muslims, or Buddhists, we must not disrespect the feelings and thoughts of others, their rights to practice as they wish, or try to push our views down other people’s throats.
